Our university is in the city Utrecht, the
place to be! The city centre is historical, a side of the city very interesting
for history teachers/students of course. Like Amsterdam it has canals and a lot
of old and beautiful buildings. You could see it is like little Amsterdam.
One of the historical parts of the city
centre is the church and the tower what also part is of the church. The tower
is called ‘De Domtoren’. There is a great story about a huge storm in 1674,
whom blown away the part of de building that connected the church with the
tower.
Besides de historical part of the city, it also
is very cultural. There are many restaurants and bars where you can have a
drink or got something to eat. There are all kinds off restaurants, like
American, Spanish or Indian, so enough to choose from! The reason because
Utrecht is so cultural is because it’s a multicultural city. Fact is that 1 out
of 6 people in Utrecht, are born somewhere else then the Netherlands. About 57236
people in Utrecht are from other countries, for example 13477 are officially born in Morocco.
A very typical thing about The Netherlands
and for Utrecht, is that there are a lot of bicycles. There are many people who
cycle through the city, because it’s one of the fastest ways to go from one
point to another in the city.
A lot of students cycle from the city to
the University of applied science. Most of them life in the city in student
houses. That a lot of the people who life in Utrecht, are students, gives a
great vibe in the evenings when a lot of them go out for a drink with friends.
This is one of the things that makes Utrecht so special. A lot of the student come from all over the
world. Unfortunately not at our study, they only give the courses in
Dutch.
Because of the many cyclers in Utrecht, it makes
a good example for other cities in Europe. Utrecht is doing great things to
become a city of Healthy Urban Living. That’s of course great for the town, the
hole land and of course the whole world. Together we can approve the climate by
more cycling for example, like we do in Utrecht. A lot of European countries
and cities are coming to Utrecht to get advice, about how they can improve
their cities to create healthy living and a greater climate.
Also you may know this creature
It’s called ‘Nijntje’, drawn by a man named
Dick Bruna, who lived in Utrecht. Nijntje is called Miffy in English. There are
tribal images of Nijntje threw the whole city. There is even an museum about
the drawings by Dick Bruna, especially about them with Nijntje. It’s something
typical for Utrecht. All over the world this creature is recognized. Maybe also
in Spain!
